Romania is no stranger to interethnic conflicts: just consider the March 1990 events between Hungarians and Romanians that led to the deaths of five people (two Romanians and three Hungarians), and close to 300 injured people. Following a series of events backed by documents of questionable legality, orchestrated by the city mayor of Dărmănești and the people backing him, on June 6 the military graveyard in Úz Valley became the scene of the most serious inter-ethnic conflict of the past decade.

The rain couldn’t stop several hundred participants attending a peaceful demonstration against what has happened to the graveyard in the Úz Valley, organized by the Hungarian People’s Party of Transylvania (Erdélyi Magyar Néppárt or EMNP) in downtown Csíkszereda/Miercurea Ciuc.

In yesterday’s demonstration held in Csíkszereda (Miercurea Ciuc), organiser Hungarian People’s Party of Transylvania (EMNP) demanded “the immediate suspension of the nationalization of the Úzvölgye (Valea Uzului) military cemetery,” “its restoration,” and the “resignation of Hargita (Harghita) County’s prefect.”

Vice-president of the Kovászna/Covasna County Council Róbert Grüman has been fined 3,000 RON (~€635) by the Hargita/Harghita County gendarmerie on the grounds that the peaceful demonstration of the Szeklers in front of the Úz Valley cemetery wasn’t announced 48 hours in advance, as specified by law.
