Inauguration postponed, border dispute remains

On May 12, 2019, thousands have gathered and prayed for the Úz Valley graveyard during the ecumenical worship organized on the site. “What’s interesting, though, is that on May 12, when the Harghita County Council organized the ecumenical worship in the Úz Valley cemetery, it was required by law to notify the gendarmerie in time about the event. However, at that time, the Harghita County Gendarmerie said that it wasn’t competent in this matter, but the Bacău County Gendarmerie is. So we notified them as well. However, after the scandal in the Úz Valley, the Harghita County Gendarmerie again became competent on the matter and fined me for failing to notify them in time about the demonstration,” Csaba Borboly told Transylvania Now

Dărmănești hijacks the land administered by Csíkszentmárton

On January 29, 2019, Csíkszentmárton’s Mayor notifies the Harghita County prefect about the actions Dărmănești is preparing; that is, to attach the Úz Valley settlement to the city of Dărmănești, an action they consider illegal, as that settlement was part of Csíkszentmárton. Although there are no visible signs of progress in the “rehabilitation works” on March 29, 2019, the Dărmănești local council makes a major move: it changes the status of the Úz Valley cemetery from private domain to public domain.

ONCE delegation visits the Úz Valley graveyard

“I first heard about ONCE in 2015 when they asked for data about the military cemeteries administered by us, and they also reached out to other local authorities in other counties in this matter. They also reminded us that we need to administer these cemeteries and draw our attention to a celebration day, October 25, the Romanian Armed Forces Day, [Defence Minister’s Order from Oct. 10, 2005]. My answer was, that I firmly believe the graveyard is maintained and in good condition; we do our best to maintain its condition,” Gergely told Transylvania Now. Later that year, a delegation arrived in Csíkszentmárton and visited the two military graveyards administered by this local authority, including the Úz Valley site

Romania is no stranger to interethnic conflicts: just consider the March 1990 events between Hungarians and Romanians that led to the deaths of five people (two Romanians and three Hungarians), and close to 300 injured people. Following a series of events backed by documents of questionable legality, orchestrated by the city mayor of Dărmănești and the people backing him, on June 6 the military graveyard in Úz Valley became the scene of the most serious inter-ethnic conflict of the past decade.

Romania should punish those “truly responsible” for the violent incident in the Úzvölgye (Valea Uzului) memorial cemetery instead of penalising peaceful commemorators, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said in Budapest on Thursday.

Hungary expects Romania to conduct a “fair review” of last Thursday’s clash in the cemetery in eastern Romania, he said.

Hundreds of Romanians broke into a graveyard of Hungarian war heroes in Úz Valley (Valea Uzului in Romanian), a Transylvanian village on 6 June 2019 to lay wreaths at the illegally erected stone crosses of Romanian war heroes purportedly laying in the World War I Hungarian-Austrian military graveyard. The violent crowd broke through the police cordon and the live chain formed by a peaceful gathering of the members of the Hungarian community trying to protect the graveyard. They tore down the gate and broke into the cemetery to hold a commemoration, all while vandalizing several of the Hungarian graves, making provocative chants and throwing stones at the Hungarians present.

Angry Romanian nationalists broke into a Hungarian WW1 memorial site in Úzvölgye, Romania. First, they were battling the Romanian Gendarmerie, then started abusing the peacefully protesting ethnic Hungarians with flagpoles. Later they broke through the cemetery gate to the stone cross monument and the site. The Hungarian government has submitted a letter of protest, and the Romanian ambassador to Hungary was summoned for a meeting in the foreign ministry, which the Ambassador refused. Instead, the Romanian Foreign Minister asked his Hungarian counterpart to send a “clear message to the Hungarian community to avoid confrontation and escalation of tensions.”
